Mediator Frequently Asked Questions 1) I want to be a mediator, where do I begin the process? Information about training opportunities, where to obtain experience and the guidelines to become a CCMO Professional Mediator are contained in the RESOURCE GUIDE on the CCMO website www.ccmo.info where you can read or print the information. You may also call anyone on the CCMO Board of Directors or any member to ask for information. Board members are listed on the website under CCMO ORGANIZATION and members are listed under MEMBERS - Professional Mediator Members are highlighted. 2) I have orders from the court to schedule mediation ASAP. What should I do first? Contact a mediator to schedule your mediation. You can find a CCMO Professional Mediator at the CCMO website - www.ccmo.info and click on MEDIATOR REFERRALS to find a Professional Mediator by practice area or location. 3) I have received documents from the court and I don’t know what to do. Can a mediator help me? If you have been ordered to mediation, or you and the other party are willing to mediate you can contact a mediator through the CCMO website www.ccmo.infounder MEDIATOR REFERRALS. If you have not been ordered to mediation or you and the other party are not at a point where you are ready to mediate - Contact the court for clarification and/or contact an attorney. 4) How much does mediation cost? The fees vary by mediator. Generally, the cost is per hour or session and the numbers of hours or sessions depends on the type of case, number of parties, number of issues, etc. You can go to the CCMO website at www.ccmo.info and click on MEDIATOR REFERRALS to find a mediator by practice area or location. Some mediator listings will indicate that the mediator offers sliding scale rates; and/or you can call mediators who meet your qualifications and inquire about their fees. 5) I am interested in mediation training; can you suggest the best place to start? You can go to the CCMO website at www.ccmo.info and look up the RESOURCE GUIDE that you can read or print. The Guide provides information about training opportunities, where to obtain experience and the guidelines to become a CCMO Professional Mediator. 6) I am interested in an internship (with your organization), can you give me names of mediators who might need my help? You can go to the CCMO website at www.ccmo.info and look up the RESOURCE GUIDE. This will give you information about possible internship opportunities and/or where to offer pro bono services to gain experience. Often internship arrangements develop through networking. 7) Can mediation be done over the phone? Although, most mediators prefer in person mediation - telephone mediation is also available. Contact mediators of your choice to discuss this possibility. 8) What are Colorado’s requirements with regard to the mediators? Although the State of Colorado has not established “requirements” for mediators, the Colorado Council of Mediators (CCMO), the Colorado Bar Association and the Judicial Branch of the State of Colorado developed Training Guidelines. These Training Guidelines are utilized by CCMO as requirement to designate Professional Mediator status. You can go to the CCMO website at www.ccmo.info and look at TRAINING GUIDELINES (see also the RESOURCE GUIDE). 9) What is CCMO’s policy on sales calls? Requests for advertising? These offers must be in writing through the US Mail or in an email that will be “forwarded“to a designated board of directors’ member for review. No response to these offers is a declination of the offer.
