I have been a business attorney with Moye White LLP in Denver since 1980, primarily focusing on Chapter 11 business bankruptcies.  Arising out of my extensive experience negotiating complex multi-party business disputes and workouts in and out of bankruptcy, I realized that I enjoyed helping other parties resolve their disputes as much as I enjoyed advocating for my own client.  This led me to study mediation, including initially taking 40-hour courses at CDR Associates and Harvard Law School (more recently I also completed the American Bankruptcy Institute 40-hour course at St. John's University in NYC).  I began mediating cases in the mid to late 1990's.

My mediation work has gradually evolved over the years from a small adjunct of my legal practice to a major component of my professional life.  To date I have conducted roughly 40 mediations, most of which have involved complex business, commercial, real estate, and/or bankruptcy issues across a variety of industries.  Most have addressed financial issues involving six to eight figures, and many have taken significant time and effort to resolve.  I particularly enjoy the challenge of multi-party disputes.  I have mediated matters in Colorado, Utah, California, and New York, and remain open to serving out of state.

After more than 37 years at Moye White, this year I reached the decision to retire from the full-time practice of law at the firm and to go out on my own effective January 2018, focusing strictly on mediation of complex business, commercial, real estate, and bankruptcy disputes.  I will conduct this practice through my professional corporation, James T. Burghardt, P.C., d/b/a Burghardt Mediation Works.  My new website and related materials are currently in development.  I want to join theMAC as another element of this transition.  I already am a member of the National Academy of Distinguished Neutrals, and I may pursue one or more additional affiliations pertinent to my areas of focus.

I have twice been designated the "People's Choice" (once for bankruptcy, once for mediation) in Law Week Colorado's Barrister's Best award program.  I have been selected for other honors over the years, but since they do not pertain directly to mediation, I will not list them here.   If you need any further information, I will be happy to provide it.  Thanks.
